Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When and Where are Band Booster Meetings?

Band Booster meetings are schedules monthly around the band calendar. They take place in the band hall at 6PM. Please see the Booster page for this year's meeting calendar.
What is a Band Booster?

A Band Booster is any supporter of the Mighty Owl Band!
What do the Band Boosters do?

Band boosters support the band through fundraising, event planning, feeding, and special projects. They also work to provide scholarships for band students and provide the annual Band Banquet.
What if I do not have a lot of time to commit to help the band?

There is always ways to help! Needs can be met financially or even in "off hours" by making food, sewing clothing, sending emails and social media messages,  and much more. One of the biggest way to help is in the concession stand on Friday Night Football Games.
What does it cost for my student to be in Band?

There are some costs associated with band which mostly come down to supplies needed. It is the responsibility of each student to take care of the supplies they need for band, but we are here to help! Let us know of any challenges you are having and we can always work something out!
What other expenses are there?

There are optional expenses in band such as the Band Spring Trip and we will be offering some optional apparel band items.
What about Band Trips?

Each Spring the band will take an overnight trip usually following the plan of "in state" alternating with "out of state" trips. Our next out of state trip is TBD. The band went to Disney World the spring of 2019.
How do I stay informed?

You are starting off in the best place! This website should have most of what you might be looking for. Mr Marchese will send out weekly or biweekly band updates which will detail upcoming band events and various things going on in the band program. Make sure you are on his email list. You can also access the latest band update mail out by clicking the link on the front page of the website.
What is Summer Band?

Summer band is the rehearsals that take place in the summer before school starts each year. They usually consist of a week long Summer Band Camp and several evening rehearsals in the weeks leading up to the start of school. Think of them as similar to the "two-a-days" that sports do but for band. It is during this time there will be intensive work training students for the upcoming marching season and marching show.
What is alternate in Marching Band?

Like most bands, the Hondo High School Band does use some students as "alternates". These are students who might not be up to the standard called for in terms of musical ability, marching ability, or have attendance problems. Alternates still have a spot in the show that they learn for football games but they do not march at competitions. When someone in who is not an alternate loses their spot in the show, an alternate is moved into that spot. Alternates are selected by the Band Directors during Marching Season. Alternates are still required to attend all rehearsals and band events and may be called up to move props or equipment at competitions. Alternates who are moved into the show when a spot is available are selected by reviewing attendance, work ethic, and ability to perform.
Do students have to attend all football games?

Yes, Band students are required to attend all Football Games with the band. However, certain absences may be excused should the need arise. Please talk to a band director should you have an issue. Attendance issues may result in a student losing their spot on the field or possibly even removal from the band program.

What does "Getting a 1" mean?

Ratings at UIL competitions are on a scale of Division 1 to Division 5 (Sometimes marked with roman numerals I-V). A Division 1 does not mean "1st Place" but rather it is the highest rating a band can receive at a regional event. A Division 5 is the lowest possible score. At the area and state level, bands are ranked with higher ranked bands advancing to the finals or to the next level of competition. Other contests will usually give a Division Rating and a placement within the rules of their own competition. Hondo High School is currently enjoying 31 consecutive years of Division 1 Ratings in UIL Marching Band!
